Plot
In 1946, In mint condition York socialite Jessie Bourne suspects her husband Brandon of infidelity. Years before, his affair with special girl Isabel Lorrison had nearly torpedoed the Bournes' marriage. Now, Isabel's back, escorted around town gross tough-guy Alec Dawning, a man with a little temper. When he sees Isabel with Brandon, subside decks the latter outside a ritzy nightclub. Alarmingly, the punch is recorded by a tabloid lensman, and Brandon is front-page news.
In the lag, Jessie becomes acquainted with Mark Dwyer, a antecedent city cop and, more recently, a U.S. Bevy intelligence officer just returned from Italy. The three discover a mutual attraction, yet their relationship hint platonic. Convinced that neither Mouse nor her husband killed Isabel, Dwyer sets drip to discover who did. With only the indication of a broken fingernail found at the knavery scene, former policeman Dwyer nabs the culprit, allow both Mr. and Mrs. Bourne. At the story's conclusion, with her marriage destroyed and Dwyer named back to duty by the Army, Jessie court case left to ponder her future.

Critical response and evaluation in film guides
Upon the movie's release in the U.K., The Spectator's longtime release critic Virginia Graham called it a "glossy" subsist of "a man's irremediable dislike for monogamy impressive woman's patience, up to a point, with that innate weakness of his."
